Water(colour) - source of life
Miriam Smidt was born and grew up in Ostfriesland, a barren, windy region of Germany, close to the North Sea with its unique worldwide Wadden Sea - caused by the tides. The constant movement of the water - enriched with the swirl of life - contrasts the "emptiness" and flatness of the country in this area. Smite always felt drawn to the water. Same as she felt drawn to art, but didn't dare to give herself into that suction for more than a decade. Until she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2016. This incident sloshed into her mind like a storm tide - she gave up her work as a social scientist and author to follow that path.
Smidt's art is fluid art, though it is not that kind of ubiquitous fluid art with it's chemical products like solvents, resins, and binders. Smidt - fascinated by the viscousity of the paint but repelled by the artificialty of the chemicals - invented a method of fluid painting with watercolorinks and paste. The paste dries invisibly. The colors shine themselves and the paper shines through the colors. Watching Smidt's artwork, you can track the effects of ebb and flow, empathize drying processes, and follow up erosions.
Smidt's titles refer to the struggle for a balance between a life with limitations and the unconditional will to break cages and chains. They're not infrequently accompanied by an ironic wink. Her art is about the inability to control. It's impossible to control the liquids on your paper or anything else in the world. You try to compose an artpiece - a life / curriculum vitae / your memoirs and everything runs like water through your fingers.
Smidt's works show moments of energy and dynamism - the image can be changed with one wipe of your hand. Similar to the dynamics of life, which can “suddenly” be over with a fateful wipe. Transience and legacies...
For Smidt, there is no answer to the heavy and grim facts of life but to oppose them with levity - with the transparency and brightness of the watercolourinks she uses.
