Silvia Regnitter-Prehn is a German artist, color psychologist and certified mental trainer based in Grünwald, near Munich. Born in Passau, Germany, she completed her psychological-pedagogical studies in Düsseldorf and Cologne.

"The psychology of perception around the question of how people perceive colors was particularly important to me. After my training in psychology and education, I worked in kindergartens and schools. In addition to my work, I first began to add color to rooms and corridors. The facilities became more colorful, humane and motivating through the color environment. My focus was not only on the development and growth of the people. The environment and the placement of colors also gained importance. Color is a sensory perception, it influences the overall feeling of well-being or evokes discomfort. Physical processes are also influenced.

I have been leading workshops on "color and art" since 1980. My personal focus in workshops is the linking and integration of color, movement and art and their different, communicative backgrounds. I also advise companies and public institutions in the field of color and art design. My work is about exploring and understanding the effect of colors on people. For more than 40 years I have been dealing with the history and meaning of colors, researching in scientific committees with topics from the psychology of perception and the effect of colors on people."

Artist Statement

"It doesn't make sense to look at a particular color, isolated. Colors always interact with other colors. Only the whole makes a picture - either coherent or incoherent". "My mostly large-format artworks are characterized by palette knife technique, self-made pigment colors and their dissolving expression. I love variety in painting and I am often occupied with "dissolving" color techniques. I often work on different paintings at the same time. My concern is to depict light, wideness and space. I work with both concrete and abstract motifs and also like to combine both.

The techniques I use are various. Because of its brilliance, oil paint play a leading role in my paintings. But I also appreciate the combination of oil and acrylic for new experimental techniques, especially in the glazed artworks. I generally paint with acrylics, oil paint, earth pigments, color blends and palette knife methods on surfaces such as cotton, linen, wooden panels.

The process does not follow predetermined rules, but follows the processes of the unconscious, similar to surrealism. Each of my paintings begins with a single thought, a spark that gradually expands and grows into a theme. I dedicate my work entirely to colors and their effect on the viewer." - Silvia Regnitter- Prehn
