TORGE STEFFENS

Artist Statement

Torge Steffens is German artist and designer born 1974 in Bremervoerde.

Ever since Torge was a child, he has always been into music and arts, he learned playing the violin, guitar, piano and painted a lot. When he finished school, he had to choose between studying music or art. At the end, he studied Design (Communication Design) and it was a really good decision. At this time Torge was inspired by artists like Egon Schiele and Horst Janssen.

Torge started to paint “seriously" when he was like 16/17 years old. He developed his style and technique during his studies in his mid twenties (1996-1999). During his career as a designer, he didn’t paint at all (only sketching and illustrating).  Since 3 years he has started again, now with all the experiences made as a creative director.

With the series „Ach…Mensch“, he thought about watching the society (people, mankind) interacting with each other and with the environment, nature etc.

When he started working on the series "Oh ... human", he felt like the society needed to change something in regard to the situation, generally, but what can one do individually? You watch helplessly how everyone keeps going as if there was nothing wrong. All caught in the routine and our convenience. Is there still hope? Will nature someday fight back and purify itself? And what does an alien think when he watches us from afar?

Torge is influenced by artists like Marco Reichert, Emma Bernhard, Taylor A. White, Mark Rothko; he is especially inspired by nature and urban

surroundings.
